Newly minted Carver Police Chief Matthew Rayner will start as police chief after the retirement of former Carver Police Chief Marc Duphily on Wednesday.
Rayner, who served as a police sergeant for Carver, was chosen by the Carver Select Board in September.
“I’m honored by the opportunity to serve the Town of Carver as its Chief of Police,” Rayner said. “I’m grateful to the Select Board for their confidence in me, and I want to thank Chief Duphily for his leadership and service to this department and community.”
According to the Carver Police Department, Rayner joined the department in 2017 as a patrol officer, has worked patrol shifts and handled investigations related to domestic violence and sexual assault. Rayner was promoted to sergeant in April 2021.
Prior to serving on the Carver Police Department, Rayner worked in the New Bedford Police Department for 17 years as a patrol officer, patrol sergeant and detective sergeant in the department’s Family Services Unit.
Rayner served in the air force prior to that, from 1996 to 2000 as a Security Forces K-9 handler. In that role, Rayner was assigned to support the United States Secret Service, working in explosive device detection for presidential operations.
Rayner has a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Western New England College and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Lasell University.
“I look forward to continuing the department’s work to keep Carver safe and strengthening our connection with residents and the community,” Rayner said.
